Town of Eger
Eger is a beautiful little city in northern Hungary on the Eger stream. It has a population of 50,000 and is best known for it castle, thermal baths and the northernmost Turkish minaret.
The castle is definitely worth a visit. Large portions of it are closed and ruined, but the vistas over the city on a clear day are wonderful. You might also overhear the story of the wine known as Bull's Blood...
The story goes that during an attack by the Ottoman's, lead by Suleiman the Magnificent, the Hungarian leader, István Dobó, encouraged his sorely outnumbered troops to drink lots on wine to bolster their strength. They mixed the wine they had on-hand and drank with vigor, spilling it and turning their beards and armor red. As the siege continued, word passed among the Turks that the Hungarians were drinking bull's blood to make them strong. The Turks eventually gave up and Bull's Blood was born.
Today, Bull's Blood is a dry red wine mixed from three or mores types of grapes.
