Wawel Castle & grounds
Wawel Castle sits on limestone rock formed 150 million years ago. High on the hill, above the river Vistula flood waters, Slavs have lived there since the 7th century. The hill and castle have seen the rule of many Polish kings, the first Miesco 965-992, Casimir the Restorer (1034-1058), Ladislas the Short (1306-1333) to name but a few. The castle is now a national cultural institution, containing exhibits including prints, sculpture, textiles, tapestry, goldsmithing, armor, ceramics and Italian Renaissance paintings.
